Sherry Cothran
Rev. Sherry Cothran, M.Div., has served as senior pastor in United Methodist congregations in Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, for a decade. Formerly a recording artist on Mercury Records, she is an award-winning singer/songwriter and author of two books. Sherry has released four solo CD’s, her music has been featured in t.v. and film. She’s shared stages with hit rock acts such as Goo Goo Dolls, Bare Naked Ladies, Spin Doctors and K’s Choice and toured around the world as the lead singer of a popular rock band, The Evinrudes, before entering seminary and becoming an ordained, United Methodist minister. As a pastor of a multi-cultural, urban church, Sherry began to share stories on her blog, “Peddling Hope in Dystopia” of everyday sacred encounters with those who were labeled “refugee,” “immigrant” and “homeless.” She later shared them in a book that became beloved by readers, Tending Angels: Stories From the Frontlines of Heaven and Earth. Her writing was featured in publications such as Abingdon Women, Interpreter Magazine and Ministry Matters. She was also a regular contributor to the homiletics journal, Good Preacher. She was the artist in residence in 2015 at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and received two grants to develop her creative writing from the Louisville Institute for Pastoral Study. Her story has been featured in various publications including USA Today. Recently, she became the founder and president of the nonprofit, Beloved Woman, a ministry that helps women who are financially disadvantaged to become self-employed or find a pathway to a living wage. She tours regularly, performing, speaking and leading workshops.
In her new book, Wild and Holy Prophets, Warriors, Harlots & Healers: Women of the Bible, Sherry takes us out into the Bible’s uncharted regions, beyond those selected scriptures that have often been used to tame the feminine spirit, to meet the wild and holy women of the Bible. Blending the brightest in biblical scholarship with her vast experiences, Rev. Sherry Cothran leads us into healing encounters with the Bible’s lost stories of women who were warriors, prophets, harlots, and healers. The book and 10 original songs call us to live free, faithful, and fearless lives. In the pages and songs of Wild and Holy you’ll find new narratives from old stories and awaken to the image of a loving God within.

Episode 421: The Gospel In Middle Earth with Michael T. Jahosky

Michael T. Jahosky - The Good News of the Return of the King: The Gospel in Middle Earth
Although many people today reject Christianity for intellectual reasons, greater numbers of people are rejecting Christianity because it does not engage their imagination. Christians must not only demonstrate that the Christian worldview is true, but that it is also good, beautiful, and relevant. The Good News of the Return of the King: The Gospel in Middle-earth is a book that endeavors to show the truth, goodness, and beauty of Jesus Christ, the gospel, and the biblical metanarrative by engaging the imagination through J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, as well as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. In this book, Michael T. Jahosky proposes that J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is a story about what Jesus' parables are about: the good news about the return of the king. As a work of imaginative fiction similar to Jesus' parables, The Lord of the Rings can bypass both intellectual and imaginative objections to the gospel and pull back the "veil of familiarity" that obscures the gospel for many.
Michael T. Jahosky is the author of The Good News of the Return of the King: The Gospel in Middle-Earth and he has stopped by the podcast for a visit on this episode.

Episode 415: Holy Week Special - Selected Reading from Thank God It's Friday by William Willimon
It's Holy Week 2021 and I can think of no better way to spend it than by reflecting on the words of Jesus from the cross. Dr. William Willimon has been a friend of this show over the years and I thought it would be fitting to read a selection from his book, Thank God It's Friday: Encountering The Seven Last Words from the Cross on the show this week.
I also would encourage listeners to click the link below, get a copy of the book, and read through it yourself during this holy week. It truly is an insightful companion on the journey of Holy Week or really any time of the year.

Guest Caroline Cobb - Episode 394
CAROLINE COBB SHORT BIO:
In 2011, singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb gave herself a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in a year. That year of writing set in motion a passion to tell the stories of scripture through music, with imagination, artistry and faithfulness to the text.
Caroline’s forthcoming album, A Seed, A Sunrise, explores the longing hope of Advent, the joy of Christmas and the anticipation of Christ’s return. Produced by Isaac Wardell (Josh Garells, Sandra McCracken) and featuring gospel trio Resound and a fourteen-piece string orchestra, these songs are rich with biblical truth, artful arrangements, and poetic lyrics to help the Church rehearse and remember God’s Story. The new album builds on Caroline’s previous full-length projects the Blood + the Breath (2013) and a Home & a Hunger (2017). Both traced a biblical theme from creation to Christ’s return, with every song parachuting into a different biblical scene.
Caroline has been featured by The Gospel Coalition, Doxology & Theology, Risen Motherhood and more, with a Home & a Hunger named among the “Best Albums of the 2010s” by The Gospel Coalition. She has been compared to Rich Mullins, Andrew Peterson, Sandra McCracken and Ellie Holcomb. She and her husband live in Dallas, TX with their three children Ellie, Harrison and Libby.

Saying No To God with Matthew J. Korpman - Episode 378
My guest today on Voices In My Head is Matthew J. Korpman. Matthew is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church who has served as both a student pastor and chaplain within the denomination and has also served as a homilist for various parishes outside the denomination, including the Episcopal church. He holds three Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in Theology, Archaeology, Philosophy, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Screenwriting, all from La Sierra University. In his new book Saying No to God: A Radical Approach to Reading the Bible Faithfully, Matthew makes the case that Blessed are those who defy God. Although bumper stickers abound that propose otherwise, the Bible itself reveals that just because “God says it,” does not, in fact, mean “that settles it.” On the contrary, Korpman contends that a close reading of Scripture reveals that God does not want us to blindly obey him, but rather, invites us to “lock hands” with him and fight. The purpose of this book is to show another way to understand the Bible, one in which readers are not asked to accept what God says, but on the contrary: to say no to it, not because they merely want to, but because the God of the Bible actually requires it.

Dan Koch Is Giving You Permission - Episode 371
Dan Koch is the host of the popular podcast You Have Permission, which deals with theology, science, prayer, psychology, and related topics. His listeners range from moderate Evangelicals to Progressive/Liberal Christians, with a few non-religious folks sprinkled in.
Recently, Dan conducted 20 interviews around the topic of End Times theology and its relationship to mental health issues as part of his doctoral dissertation in psychology. He has turned those 20 conversations into a 4-part highly-produced series, currently airing now on the You Have Permission podcast feed. The stories include self-proclaimed prophetesses, doomsday prepping, praying the Rapture would keep a young man from having to live out a gay lifestyle, and more. Dan also deals with topics on his show like Universal Salvation, Trump & Evangelicals, his own faith story of anxiety and control vs. awe and wonder, Old Testament violence, Purity Culture, and LGBT Affirmation.

Episode 353: Rick Lee James Thunder Radio Special
In partnership with CRW Radio Promotions, singer, songwriter and worship leader Rick Lee James debuts a brand new radio special. The “Thunder Radio Special” can be heard exclusively on James’ official YouTube channel or his website. It was also recently added to Spotify and Apple Music. Radio stations interested in airing the “Thunder Radio Special” can contact Kathryn Ambrose at CRW Radio Promotions at kathryn@westarmediagroup.com.The new radio special highlights five songs from James’ critically-acclaimed 13-track album, Thunder, released in February, and features his thoughtful commentary on each selection. “I think part of the reason we often connect so deeply with a song is that the story behind it draws us in and gives us a deeper connection with both the music and the artist,” James reflects. “The powerful thing about the format of a documentary-style radio special like this one is that it allows me to share my heart through both the songs and the stories.”Throughout the half-hour special, James shares the story behind the project’s title track—a previously unreleased song co-written by the late Rich Mullins. In addition, the singer reveals his thoughts surrounding the deeply personal “The Lord Is Our Shepherd,” a song he wrote as a love letter to the multiple children he and his wife have lost to miscarriage. Other selections spotlighted on the radio special include “Whom Have I In Heaven But You (Psalm 73),” “Glory To God The Trinity (Trinity Hymn)” and “Stay.”Just like he creates thought-provoking conversations around the songs he writes and records, James has become a well-known podcaster, sparking dialogue with a variety of well-known artists. He’s recorded well over 300 episodes for his official podcast, “Voices In My Head,” where he’s interviewed leading singer/songwriters, including Andrew Peterson, Sara Groves and Keith Getty, among others. In addition, he recently launched a limited series podcast called “Welcome To The Neighborhood,” in memory of the beloved Fred Rogers. Personally inspired by Mister Rogers and the wisdom he shared over his lifetime, James launched a Twitter account @MisterRogersSay in 2017, where he posts quotes from the iconic children’s television star. The account is currently averaging 1K new followers each week. For James, it’s simply one more way to spread the Gospel message.“I honestly believe that running the Mister Rogers Quotes account @MisterRogersSay has been one of the best ministries of my life,” he shares. “Fred Rogers always reminded us, with his Christlike spirit, that we are people who are dearly loved and that everyone has worth. All these years after he passed away, it’s amazing to see the impact on our lives that his words still have, because they were spoken in truth and love.”The first six episodes of the exclusive “Welcome To The Neighborhood” podcast can be heard HERE.Request the “Thunder Radio Special” at www.crwradiopromotions.com. On each episode of The Evangelicals Podcast, hosts Jeremy Thompson and Jonathan Burkey try and help people think critically, discussing identity and cultural topics with a Christian lens. On their show, they ask questions about how a Christian might see these topics from a Biblical perspective. They are here today this week to give us a glimpse us behind the scenes, to talk about the original meaning of the word evangelical, and their mission to reclaim it's true meaning.
