Caste by Isabel Wilkerson - Episode 407 - Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast)
I recently finished reading this extraordinary book by Isabel Wilkerson and I really hope that as many people will read it as possible. So, even though I would love to have Miss Wilkerson on my show, I haven't been able to work that out yet, so I though the next best thing might be to my listeners a taste of her writing and some links where you can get a copy of her book. Please listen and please get a copy for yourself. It' such an important book and you will hear why on today's episode.

The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power—which groups have it and which do not.” In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and the nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people—including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others—she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. She documents how the Nazis studied the racial systems in America to plan their out-cast of the Jews; she discusses why the cruel logic of caste requires that there be a bottom rung for those in the middle to measure themselves against; she writes about the surprising health costs of caste, in depression and life expectancy, and the effects of this hierarchy on our culture and politics. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity.Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Spotlight on Matt K. Lewis - Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 406
Called a “first-rate talent” in The Washington Post and “super-smart” by John Heilemann, Matt K. Lewis is a center-right critic of American politics and pop culture.
As a journalist, Lewis has earned a reputation as an “independently minded” (Columbia Journalism Review) and “intellectually honest” commentator (Ben Adler, Newsweek). He is a senior columnist for The Daily Beast, and his work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, GQ, The Washington Post, The Week, Roll Call, Politico, The Telegraph, The Independent, and The Guardian. He previously served as senior contributor for The Daily Caller, and before that, as a columnist for AOL’s Politics Daily.
Lewis dissects the day’s issues in conversation with other thinkers, authors, and newsmakers on his podcast Matt Lewis and the News, and co-hosts The DMZ Show with liberal pundit Bill Scher. He is a political commentator for CNN, has appeared on C-SPAN, PBS NewsHour, ABC’s “Nightline,” HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” and CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” and has contributed to radio outlets including NPR and the BBC.
Kirsten Powers described Lewis’s 2016 book, Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Went From the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump, as “a lively and fascinating read for any person confounded by the state of today’s Republican Party.” In 2011, Lewis released The Quotable Rogue: The Ideals of Sarah Palin in Her Own Words, an edited compilation of the Alaska governor’s much-discussed public utterances.

Episode 405 - Postcards From Babylon with Brian Zahnd, David & Kathi Peters
Postcards From Babylon is a long-form documentary featuring author and pastor, Brian Zahnd, as he investigates possibly the most important question for the church in North America today:
How does the church stay faithful to the beautiful way of Jesus while situated in one of the most divisive political climates in our nation's history?
The film explores how Christians seeking proximity to power has led to a hyperpartisan Nationalistic posture that is demonstrably hindering the witness of Christ.
As exiled citizens of a superpower nation, Christians' deepest allegiance must be to the peaceful Kingdom of God, and from that posture they must always speak truth to power...no matter the cost.

Band Bio
Sow and Tether exists to enrich and excite souls with the grace and truth of Christ through song. We are part of the worship teams at Redeemer Baptist Church and Getwell Road Church in the Northwest Mississippi / Memphis, Tennessee area, and we lead and write songs that speak the truth of the gospel of Jesus to encourage and edify the Church. We lead worship for conferences, camps, D-Nows, retreats, and various other events as our schedules allow.
Born out of Redeemer Baptist Church in Olive Branch, Mississippi, our desire for those we have the opportunity to minister to is the same as our desire for our own congregations: to sing songs with deep gospel roots that help people to see the glory of the risen Christ. Every opportunity to lead others is met with this calling, and we would love to partner with your church or organization in ministry.
Hunter Bobo is the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of Sow and Tether. He serves as Worship Pastor at Redeemer Baptist Church in Olive Branch, MS.
Stephen McNeill is the bassist for Sow and Tether. He is a singer-songwriter and music teacher.

400th MEGA-Episode with Phil Keaggy
Welcome back to Voices In My Head. Today is our 400th episode celebration and because this is a special episode, I wanted to invite a guest on the show who means a lot to me personally. Phil Keaggy is not only one of the most admired guitarists in music today, he is also a person of humility, generosity, and integrity who has used his art to share the love of God around the world.
Phil is such a talented guitarist, that most of us who play guitar would be happy if we were able to play his mistakes as well as he does. From beginning guitarists, to music industry professionals, nearly everyone who has held a guitar pick owes a debt of gratitude to Phil Keaggy for giving us something to aspire to with our playing and in our walk with God.
It’s my pleasure to welcome Phil back to our show today so we can discuss some of his favorite musical moments in a career that has spanned over 55 years.

About Church Music Makers
We are all church music makers. We may be in big congregations, small congregations, congregations with minimal resources, congregations with many resources. We may be organists, choir directors, guitar players, drummers, singers, whatever the case is, this blog is for all of us!
Church Music Makers is written by Craig Harmann, a pastor’s kid, who started playing the piano at 5, playing preservice Christmas Eve piano pieces in 2nd grade, playing the trumpet in 5th grade (and playing for worship not too far after…badly), playing the organ in 7th grade (and playing for Good Friday worship in 8th grade). Craig has served full time as a high school choir director, religion teacher and wind ensemble director, director of music, youth and family ministries, classroom elementary general music teacher, director of music, private lesson instructor and roving substitute musician, as well as currently serving part-time at St. Timothy Lutheran Church and teaching middle school and high school choir at Northland Christian School in Houston, Texas. Craig has had a wide variety of good and bad experiences in his 17 years of full time ministry and in each experience, has learned something from it and grown as a musician and a person.

Hymn For The 81% with guest Daniel Deitrich - Episode 398
On January 21st, 2020, Religion News Service posted an article written by Shane Claiborne that said,
“A lot of contemporary worship music doesn’t offer the best theology, but 'Hymn for the 81%,' by a South Bend, Indiana, worship leader, has gone viral with a cocktail of prophetic fire and Christ-like grace.”
Daniel Deitrich, who wrote and performed Hymn For The 81% is a singer/songwriter based in South Bend, Indiana. His honest, heartbreaking, yet hopeful writing finds a home in massive Americana anthems, catchy Indie rock hooks, as well as intimate acoustic confessionals.
