Where Goodness Still Grows with guest Amy Peterson- Episode 386
Social media and recent political events have exposed the fault lines that exist within our country and our spiritual communities. The corruption and blind spots of the evangelical church have led to the departure of so many from faith, who cite hypocrisy and partisanship as reasons they can’t stay. Chillingly, many of the virtues that we believed were a central piece of our religious heritage—including kindness, purity, modesty, hospitality, and faithfulness—have been hijacked and used for political or cultural gain.
But all is not lost. My guest today, Author Amy Peterson, wants to reimagine virtue as a tool, not a weapon; as wild, not tame; as embodied, not written. As someone intimately familiar with, fond of, and also deeply critical of the world of conservative evangelicalism, Amy dissects the moral code of American evangelicalism and re-examines what it really means to be faithful in the modern world.
Her latest book, Where Goodness Still Grows, traces the virtues from their original meanings and imagines what it could look like for us to embrace and celebrate them today. Where Goodness Still Grows is more than a book. It is a thoughtful, poetic, and deeply powerful call to reclaim our faith and it’s a book I deeply needed in 2020.

Lucas and Evelyn Cortazio - Episode 384
Rooted in Chicago’s Community Christian Church, pastored by Dave Ferguson, Community Music is comprised of worship leaders from the church’s 11 campuses. Led by Brazilian-born husband/wife team Lucas and Evelyn Cortazio since 2013, the collective is closely aligned with NewThing, a church planting network created by Community Christian Church representing more than 3000 congregations internationally. The Cortazios and Community Music lead worship annually at the Exponential Conference, and also host songwriting workshops for worship leaders from across the country and around the world. “Community Music exists to help people find their way back to God by creating a worship culture that goes beyond songs and Sundays,” explains Lucas Cortazio. “This begins at our churches in Chicago, but extends across the globe through our partnership with the NewThing network. Evelyn and I believe our main assignment in this mission is to link worshippers together from all tribes and tongues. We do this by connecting, empowering and creating platforms for other worship leaders to stand on both locally and globally.”

Guest Preacher William H. Willimon - Episode 382
Today on the podcast, I am pleased to welcome back Dr. William H. Willimon. Dr. Willimon served as the Dean of Duke Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University for two decades. He returned to Duke after serving as Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church from 2004 to 2012. He is the author of over 70 books and as you are about to hear today, he is also skilled preacher.
I asked Dr. Willimon back to Voices In My Head today because in July 12th of this year (2020) he preached a sermon at the Washington National Cathedral, and it just really resonated with me. I wanted to give my listeners a chance to hear the sermon, which speaks into our present moment of pandemic, white violence, and unrest and Dr. Willimon graciously agreed to let me share it today.

Nikki Lerner is an artist, teacher, speaker, author and culture coach helping others engage with one another relationally and across culture lines. Her passion is to see people come to an understanding of one another through music and conversation and learn to remain human with each other.
Nikki’s book, Worship Together in Your Church as in Heaven, co-written with Josh Davis, is a practical and foundational resource for pastors and worship leaders of all kinds. It addresses an urgent need in the church today: as our communities become increasingly diverse, how can we offer worship that is authentic and engaging for all of God’s people, including longtime church members?

Saying No To God with Matthew J. Korpman - Episode 378
My guest today on Voices In My Head is Matthew J. Korpman. Matthew is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church who has served as both a student pastor and chaplain within the denomination and has also served as a homilist for various parishes outside the denomination, including the Episcopal church. He holds three Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in Theology, Archaeology, Philosophy, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Screenwriting, all from La Sierra University. In his new book Saying No to God: A Radical Approach to Reading the Bible Faithfully, Matthew makes the case that Blessed are those who defy God. Although bumper stickers abound that propose otherwise, the Bible itself reveals that just because “God says it,” does not, in fact, mean “that settles it.” On the contrary, Korpman contends that a close reading of Scripture reveals that God does not want us to blindly obey him, but rather, invites us to “lock hands” with him and fight. The purpose of this book is to show another way to understand the Bible, one in which readers are not asked to accept what God says, but on the contrary: to say no to it, not because they merely want to, but because the God of the Bible actually requires it.
