Episode 350: #1 Bluegrass Songwriter Reed Jones
Reed Jones is a musician, a multi-instrumentalist, a singer and songwriter, faith journeyman, a husband, a fathera teacher and so much more. Heavily influenced by bluegrass legend Tony Rice, Jones has played with bands like Unlimited Tradition, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers, Cumberland Gap, and the acclaimed international bluegrass act Audie Blaylock and Redline.
With Redline, Jones helped record I'm Going Back to Old Kentucky, which boasted several charting singles, including the number one “Cry, Cry, Darlin'.” Jones also wrote and recorded “The Road That Winds,” the title track off Redline’s 2016 release that was featured as the theme song for The Travel Channel series Backroad Gold.
Redline’s most recent release, 2019’s Originalist, contains four songs that Jones write or co-wrote. 2 of those songs, “The Gate Called Beautiful (Acts 3)” and “Love is an Awful Thing” have both reached number one on the Bluegrass charts, with the latter holding that spot for three weeks.
Reed Jones is here with me today to share some coffee, some conversation, and some live music.

The song “The 12 Days of Christmas” is a mainstay of the holiday season, but the practice of celebrating Christmas as a twelve-day festival fell out of fashion long ago in most cultures. In Celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas, author Chris Marchand explores the history behind the season and individual feast days from December 25 to January 6, and then offers suggestions for how you can celebrate it with your family, church, or community. Marchand is an author, a church music leader, a teacher and a Pastor in the Anglican Church of North America and he’s here to discuss his new book with me today.

Episode 347: Stephen McNeill Centerpiece Volume II: Shelter and Shade
Stephen McNeill is a songwriter and music teacher who lives just outside of Memphis Tennessee.
In 2017, Stephen released his first collection of congregational songs called Centerpiece: Songs of Gospel Community. The songs on Centerpiece were born of Stephen’s experience serving as an elder in his church and walking with his community through the complexities of wrestling with Scripture and believing the Gospel in every area of life. Because of the album’s underlying theme of community, Stephen enlisted the help of a number of friends and worship leaders to bring the songs to life.
On November 29th, Stephen released Centerpiece Volume II: Shelter and Shade, the second in what he hopes to be a continuing series of congregational albums.
Stephen is here to talk about this new album and more.

Episode 346: Shea Tuttle Exactly As You Are: The Life and Faith of Mister Rogers
Fred Rogers fiercely believed that all people deserve love. This conviction wasn’t simply sentimental: it came directly from his Christian faith. God, he insisted, loves us just the way we are.
In the book, Exactly as You Are, Shea Tuttle looks at Fred Rogers’s life, the people and places that made him who he was, and his work through Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She pays particular attention to his faith—because Fred Rogers was a deeply spiritual person, ordained by his church with a one-of-a-kind charge: to minister to children and families through television.
Tuttle explores this kind, influential, and sometimes surprising man: the neighborhood he came from, the neighborhood he built, and the kind of neighbor he, by his example, calls all of us to be.

Voices In My Head Podcast Episode 343: Grace Anna Sings with Grace Anna and Angela Ray Rodgers
When she was born, doctors said Grace Anna Rodgers would likely be blind, and that her crushing scoliosis could impair her lung function. She was born with a rare form of dwarfism (Conradi Hunermann Syndrome), which causes spinal curvature, cataracts, poor hearing, and sparse hair. Despite their dire predictions about her ability to hear, Grace has been singing since she was 16 months old. In 2013, she became a YouTube sensation for her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” The video has been seen by millions of people around the world.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLdjwpfcC8w
Now, at nine years old, Grace Anna hopes people will see her beyond her physical differences and also see her feisty personality, her love for singing, and her contagious happiness for life.
Before she could speak, she was singing “Amazing Grace”and hasn’t stopped since (rare for someone with hearing limitations).
Despite the countless hospital stays and risky surgeries (even coming close to death), Grace Anna is an example of the power of the human spirit and she reminds us to be grateful for each day.

Voices In My Head Podcast Episode 341: David Weissman's Journey From The Trump Troll To Peacemaker
Can a person change? How does a person change?
Romans 12:2 says, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
With that in mind, if you change the way you think, can you change your life?
My guest today on Voices In My Head is blogger and activist David Weissman. David is a person of the Jewish faith. He is also writer for The Times of Israel https://www.timesofisrael.com/ David was born in New York and served in the US Army for 13 years, with two deployments to Afghanistan. He is a former Republican has now joined the Democratic party and is doing his best to fight for the rights of others.
That isn’t interesting part of the story however. We all know Republicans, and we all know Democrats and chances are that they are our good friends and family, even if we aren’t all on the same page together.
What is so fascinating about David’s story wasn’t just a Republican. And it wasn’t just that he was a staunch Republican. David was a full throated Trump supporter and in fact was Trump Troll online. The fact that he now supports Elizabeth Warren should tell you that there has been a change.
To quote David:
"After learning to decipher the news for myself, and after many hard conversations with many conservatives and liberals — including Sarah Silverman — I have learned that you shouldn’t take a pundit at their word. It’s good and healthy to question everything and to be skeptical of partisan “journalists.”
David's Political views are his own. The purpose of today’s show is not to endorse any political party, but to have a discussion about change and how it is possible, and to listen to a person who has had a major change in his life.
As always, thank you for listening to Voices In My Head.
