Charting the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care—not a cure— for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus.
At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure.
With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel.
Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted."
For orthodox Christians, the way forward is to take a close look at our history. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on caring over attempting to cure.
With warmth and humor, as well as original research, Still Time to Care provides:
Guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus.
Guidance for the church to repent of its homophobia and instead offer gospel-motivated love and compassion.
 
About the Author
Greg Johnson is lead pastor of historic Memorial Presbyterian Church (PCA) in St. Louis, where he has served on the pastoral staff since 2003. He holds a PhD in historical theology with a concentration in American religion from Saint Louis University and an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary. He is the author of The World according to God: A Biblical View of Culture, Work, Science, Sex and Everything Else, and Still Time to Care: What We Can Learn from the Church’s Failed Attempt to Cure Homosexuality

“February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and I'm hoping to raise awareness, share the warning signs, and how to help by discussing my journey and how God led me on the road to healing.
As the author of, It Doesn’t Start with a Punch: My Journey through an Abusive Teen Dating Relationship, I share my personal experience to help others understand how easily adolescents can become involved in an abusive relationship, how abuse can start subtly, how to help someone get help and how God healed my deep, emotional wounds.
Teen dating abuse is an important topic we need to bring into the light as awareness can stop the cycle."
Studies show that 1 in 3 young women in the United States will be in an abusive relationship (verbal, emotional, physical, and/or sexual) at some point between the ages of 16 and 24.
Emotional and verbal abuse can be just as damaging as physical and sexual abuse. All forms of abuse have short-term and long-term effects.
Most adults (81% of parents in one study) don’t believe or don’t know if teen dating violence is an issue.
I wrote the book to help parents, teachers and school counselors, abuse victims, and anyone who cares for teens learn:
The protective factors that shield youth from becoming involved with or staying with an abuser
Signs of an unhealthy romantic relationship
Reasons teenagers may stay in one, from peer pressure and shame to the misguided belief that their abusers are going to change
How to help a tween or teenager get out of an unhealthy or abusive relationship”

Brent D. Neely is an ordained minister through the Church of the Nazarene, a hospice chaplain, and a Benedictine novice monk through the House of Initia Nova - an Anglican religious community. He is currently working on his doctoral dissertation which looks at  the possibility of monastic spirituality within the Church of the Nazarene. Recently, he published The Book of Ancient Prayers: 365+ Prayers from the Saints of the Church which offers prayers from throughout Church history and from around the world. He is married to Rev. The Biggest Thing I learned In 2022
In my work as a chaplain this year, in all the books I read, patients I visited, and learning I received through didactics, this piece by Parker J. Palmer stayed with me more than any other. I think about it every day and it has transformed the way I look at doing ministry. I am grateful for it and I hope it will be meaningful to you as well.

“The human soul doesn't want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed - to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is. When we make that kind of deep bow to the soul of a suffering person, our respect reinforces the soul's healing resources, the only resources that can help the sufferer make it through.
Aye, there's the rub. Many of us "helper" types are as much or more concerned with being seen as good helpers as we are with serving the soul-deep needs of the person who needs help. Witnessing and companioning take time and patience, which we often lack especially when we're in the presence of suffering so painful we can barely stand to be there, as if we were in danger of catching a contagious disease.
We want to apply our “fix,” then cut and run, figuring we’ve done the best we can to “save” the other person.”
