Podcast Episode #200 Recorded at Temple Sholom - Guest: Rabbi Cary Kozberg
Friday Mar 24, 2017
Friday Mar 24, 2017
It's our 200th episode and we wanted to do something special. This week's episode of Voices In My Head was recorded live at temple Sholom in Springfield Ohio. Rabbi Cary Kozberg was gracious enough to sit down for a bit to discuss the things that we share in common as people of faith. It is our belief that in Judaism and Christianity there is a whole lot more that we share in common than what divides us. This is the first of what we hope will be many inter-faith dialogues between the Voices In My Head Podcast and of people of other faith. There is so much in this world that we can learn from each other, no matter how young or how old we are.
Bio for Cary Kozberg
Rabbi Cary Kozberg is currently serving as Rabbi of Temple Sholom in Springfield Ohio—the position he first held after his rabbinical ordination in 1977.
Rabbi Kozberg served as Director of Religious Life at Wexner Heritage Village, a senior residential care facility in Columbus, Ohio, from 1989 to 2015.
A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Texas (Phi Beta Kappa), Rabbi Kozberg received his Masters of Hebrew Letters and Rabbinic Ordination from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. He served as Rabbi of Temple Sholom from 1977 to 1980, and then as of Beth Israel Congregation in Roanoke, VA from 1980 to 1982.
From 1982 to 1987, Rabbi Kozberg was the Hillel Director at the University of Texas in Austin, and then spent two years as a kibbutznik in Israel at Neve Ilan.
As Director of Religious Life for Wexner Heritage Village from 1989 to 2015, he developed and broadened religious and spiritual programming for both Jewish and non-Jewish residents, their families and staff, and worked to integrate spiritual values into WHV’s program of providing holistic care to older adults.
He is a Board Certified Chaplain, and an active member of the National Association of Jewish chaplains, having received that organization’s “Chaplain of the Year” Award in 2012.
Rabbi Kozberg is a Past Chair of the Forum on Religion Spirituality and Aging, a constituent group of the American Society on Aging, and a past editor of FORSA’s quarterly newsletter. A published author and poet, he has presented workshops and seminars around the country, and is a nationally recognized resource on the spiritual, emotional, and psychological challenges that face older adults and their families. His many publications include Honoring Broken Tablets: A Jewish Approach to Dementia (Jewish Lights Publishing), “The Whole World is Full of God’s Glory” in Broken Fragments: Jewish Experiences of Alzheimer’s Disease through Diagnosis, Adaptation, and Moving On, edited by Rabbi Douglas Kohn (URJ Press), and Flourishing In The Later Years: Jewish Pastoral Perspectives on Senior Residential Care, co-edited with Rabbi James Michaels (Mazo Publishing). He has been an Instructor in the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School for Jewish Education in Columbus, and is a Past President of the Columbus Board of Rabbis. As part of his commitment to healthy and sacred living, Rabbi Kozberg is committed to physical fitness and teaches personal self-defense techniques to children, teens and adults.

episode of the Voices In My Head Podcast was recorded live at the
Empower the Church conference in Lima Ohio on Saturday October 24th,
2015. This workshop on spiritual formation deals with the following:
Leading worship requires just as much practice as playing an
instrument, learning to sing, and writing music does. This goes not only
for the worship leader, but it also applies to the other singers and
musicians on your team. In order to do our calling well, it requires
practice. As the leader of a worship team in a church I have found that
one of my most challenging tasks is not just teaching the congregation
to worship, but teaching our musicians to worship. This workshop will
focus on the practice of intentional spiritual growth in your praise
band members as a regular part of your practice times. Practicing the
presence of God together is as essential as practicing your music
together. @RickLeeJames

David Morrell and Sylvester Stallone on the set of First BloodThis week on the Voices In My Head Podcast our special guest isNew York Times Bestselling Author, David Morrell.About David Morrell:In 1972, David Morrell published his debut novel about a veteran with PTSD who returned home from the Vietnam war, bringing the war home with him. The name of this groundbreaking novel is First Blood. It was called “the father of the modern action novel,” and was widely and enthusiastically reviewed. It was also taught in high schools and colleges. It became a 1982 film, starring Sylvester Stallone, and led to a series of films about Rambo, who joined the ranks of the top five internationally recognized thriller icons: Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, James Bond, and Harry Potter. In addition to being Rambo's creator, David Morrell also holds a Ph. D. in American literature from Penn State and was a professor in the English department at the University of Iowa where he taught from 1970 to 1986. His numerous New York Times bestsellers include the classic spy novel, The Brotherhood of the Rose, The Fraternity of the Stone, and The League of Night and Fog. Eventually wearying of two professions, Morrell gave up his academic tenure in order to write full time. Shortly after, tragedy struck theMorrell family, as David's fifteen-year-old son Matthew was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer and died in 1987, a loss that haunts not only Morrell’s life but his work, as in his memoir about Matthew, Fireflies, and his novel Desperate Measures, whose main character lost a son.In 2007 after 40 years of novels, honors, and awards David Morrell was able to add comic book writer to his resume, writing the acclaimed mini-series turned Graphic Novel, Captain America: The Chosen. Since then he has also written stories for The Amazing Spider-Man as well as the Savage Wolverine. Find out even more about David Morrell on his official web site at www.DavidMorrell.net
